Meditation

Although there are an infinite amount of various meditation practices and purposes I will tell you that a person gets enormous benefit simply from sitting still and quiet for short period of time every day. A lot of people have trouble controlling the endless chatter in their minds. Simply sitting quietly makes one aware of just what thoughts are going through the mind. Just like fresh Juice cleans out the physical toxins in the body, meditation cleans out the mental toxins in the mind. The first step in redirecting thoughts is to know what thoughts are there. Often the most useless and uncomfortable thoughts are the ones that occur in loops. When the same patterns of ideas go through the mind again and again, an individual runs great rick of stagnation. It is your mind!! You choose the thoughts that go through it!!

Physical benefits that I touched upon in another blog are lengthening of the spine which reduces and eliminates chronic back pain and enlivens the nervous system.

More on Fasting

Hello to you all!

Hopefully I can bring some ideas for wellness to you. Bear in mind that some of the things I may tell you are a little extreme. I tend to do things pretty aggressively. When I was learning yoga from Ananda Marga, I learned that the ordained, meaning, the monks and nuns, were supposed to fast on special days twice a month. The lay people, i.e. everyone without orange robes, only had to fast once a month. Over the past couple of months I have taken to fasting once a week. I give the digestion a rest for one day a week. I vary the types of fasts that I do to keep it interesting. So, sometimes I do a juice fast, sometimes I will add a little fruit, sometimes just water, and once a month no food or water. This is very good to clean out the systems. Fasting helps draw toxin from all parts of the body into the intestine for removal. Sometime I may do Lemonade fast that is very popular in Hollywood, but since I am an athlete I cannot go for that long without food at this moment.

Whatever type of fast I do I definitely do not eat anything cooked. So, no meat, potatoes, bread, etc... If I eat anything at all during a fast it is fruit or vegetable. This week I was only going to drink water on Tuesday, but then I discovered that I had a lot of physical activity on my schedule for that day, so I moved it to Friday.

I find that with the advent of modern industry we live in a very toxic environment. There is pollution all around us, especially if you live in or near a city. These toxins build up over time and lead to disease later in life. Regular fasting is a way to regulate the amount of toxins stored in the body. You may feel tired when you first give it a try. This, I believe is due to two reasons. One, the body is working hard to remove toxin and you are really feeling the poison inside as it is working its way out. Two, blood sugar and metabolism are effected and the body is making adjustments. The first time you fast you may want to pick a day where you may be able to take a nap. Once you get used to it though you can fast with no problem during a normal routine.

Good luck
Wellness to you all!!

Throat Chakra

Hello to you all. I send you great energy!!

I chose the throat chakra as the topic of today's discussion because it is one that I have been struggling with recently. I feel that most of my trouble with this Chakra is due to smoking in both this life and my previous one. I have had a great interest in inhaling smoke and I believe that it has had negative effects on my communication skills. I have been over two years without smoking and am healing my throat but still some things come up. I have been doing a lot of singing recently as a means of making my throat stronger. Although I feel that I can be an effective communicator I am inclined to do more observing than interacting.

Do you ever have psychic understanding when you are in a conversation with someone? A lot of this is due to the hidden occult powers in the throat. Each chakra has special powers associated with them. The throat in particular connects to the past and future and the flow of thoughts and ideas into physical existance. Physically the throat is the thing that connects your head to your body. You need the neck as a conduit for ideas to reach your body. Pay attention to these physiologically metaphorical connections. So the Brain sends information through the neck to the body. It takes something subtle, intangible and brings it into existence, makes it real. The sound that you make with your throat in communicating ideas with others is the physical reality of intangible ideas.

Chakras

I recently had a very good friend and student ask me about literature concerning the chakras. So I was inspired to post this with the hopes of educating you on a little bit of what I know about chakras as well as point you in the direction of more information on the subject. There are many systems and theories on this topic. I have seen some parrallels. So what I will do is give you an overview starting with the root chakra and tell you a little about each one. For the very beginner on this topic Chakras are energy centers along the body. Here are some lists of things associated with each chakra.

1) root Chakra - This energy point is said to lay at the base of the spine
The color red, element of earth, self, solid propensity, grounding

2) 2nd chakra - location - lower back/genitals
color orange, sexuality, creativity, element of water, family dynamic

3) solar plexus - abdomen / navel
color yellow, power, digestion, element of fire, connection to social groups of people

4) heart - sternum / upper back
color of green, compassion, element of air, connection to all mankind, circulation

5) throat - neck
color of blue, communication, sound and light,

6) third eye - forehead
indigo, mind, ether, consciousness

7) crown - very top of head
purple, god, universal consciousness, infinity

This is a little concerning the chakras. Of course there is much more detail one can go into. I will elaborate further in puture blogs.

May you all achieve splendid consciousness and healthy bodies
I love you all

Juice Fast

I just recently began fasting again. It feels really good. Living near a city there are lots of toxins in the air and water and food. Fasting is a way to clean out these toxins bringing health to all systems of the body starting with the digestion. I used to do a 'dry' fast. Meaning I would go for one day without food or water. I found this helpful but many people find the idea of going for a day without water frightening, so i recommend a juice fast. This way you get great nutrients from fresh fruit and juices while giving your digestion a break from solid food. I have been going from one to three days on only juice and it makes me feel great. If you don't already have a juicer you should definitely get one. They are invaluable to a healthy life. When you get one juice plenty of greens. An affordable green to use is Kale and it is very good for you. You can sweeten it with apple.

To your health!!

Laugh!

Hee Hee ha ha .... lol...

I have been encouraging my yoga students to laugh for about five years now.  Ya'll have my college sweetheart to thank for this.  She informed me of a group of monks who began every day by laughing hysterically, making faces, and other forms of carrying on.  I thought this was brilliant!  Much to the benefit of the entire world, group laughter sessions have become popular all across the globe.

Students and various other folks have been increasingly providing me with more and more studies that have been done in regards to laughing.  This means that the scientific community is getting hip to this.  Niiiice!  The most recent study, my friend and student, Jakey, provided me with.  It was from the April 2009 edition of Harvard Men's Health Watch.  This was very informative.  We are beginning to have scientific proof of feeling good and why.  The best hard statistic that it had was that laughter increases blood flow 22%.  When we are under stress the arteries tighten up making it harder for blood to flow.

In our arteries there are endothelial cells.  It turns out that these cells actually produce Nitric Oxide!  What, may you ask is nitric oxide?  Laughing Gas!  This substance allows the arteries to be more elastic so they stretch and are more slippery allowing the blood to flow easier.  Studies show that laughing increased endothelial function.

Basically, this means that your own body produces laughing gas simply by laughing.  So you don't need to huff balloons at a rave, or make more frequent visits to your oral surgeon, dentist friend.  Laughing alone relaxes your arteries and makes you healthier decreasing chances of heart attack.  The best part is laughter only leads to more laughter.

I advocate silliness!

Teeth Yoga

Happy Teeth

I never payed much attention to the importance of flossing teeth until recently.  I mean c'mon!  How much food really gets caught in there?

Regardless of how much food gets caught in your teeth the gum stimulation provided by flossing is golden.  Much of yoga is about awareness.  Flossing I find brings great awareness to the mouth.  Last year I bought floss at Costco!  I was so excited I kept telling everyone how I had enough floss for the rest of my life.  I kept a pack in my car, one in my gym bag, one on the night stand, and of course, one in the bathroom.  So much fun!

Love

Love is Key

today and always I emphasize the importance of love.  The love I am talking about is an all encompassing love.  Specific and general.  An overall loving feeling.

When a task is done with love its effect is amplified ten-fold.

try it

If you find yourself doing something, and having a hard time, and there are nasty thoughts swirling about in your personal vortex, then stop a moment...  Take a step back and focus on loving thoughts.  Love yourself, love the task, love the whole universe!!!  Go back to the task and see what happens.

I love you

Stomach Lift

                                            Ewww! Gross! :0

ha ha that is a common reaction.
This is actually very beautiful

Here is me doing ancient stomach cleansing ritual.  This is known as Uddiyana-banda.  In order to do this one is recommended to practice holding the breath after full exhalation first.  Once you are comfortable with retaining an exhale you should breath out all oxygen then with breath held make like you are trying to breath in while keeping the throat closed so that no air can come in.  This will create pressure and draw abdominal organs up into your ribcage.

This is very therapeutic and cleansing.  As with all things it gets better with practice.  You may only feel slight pressure at first but soon you will develop great abdominal strength and flexibility.

twists

here's a yoga post!
Add Image

this goes along the lines of the last one about connections.  metaphor.  Parrellels between mind and body.

twists
If a person is good at spinal twists they are said to be good at changing direction.  This is both physically and in life in general.  This means that a persons physical ability reflects their mental ability.  Their spine is supple and can bend.  Likewise in life they can navigate around roadblocks and stumbling stones that may come in their path.

Spiritual Metaphor

In my long study of spirituality I have found that many things are metaphorical and parrallels can be drawn between things.  This happens commonly between the big three breakdown of yoga, being mind, body, spirit.  In ancient hermetic philosophy these three were seen as a general division in what makes a being.  They are divisions we can understand to make sense of ourselves and our universe.  The important thing to note is that although they appear to be differrent, mind, body, and spirit are the same.

These being directly interrelated there are parrallels between them.  On a mental/physical level one may see the relationship of a persons body and mind.  For instance, if a person is capable of doing backbends with ease, that person generally is more extroverted and social.  If a person lends themselves to forward bends they may be more introverted and contemplative.  Do you see how the mental and the physical relate.  This is back to polarity, open and close, light and dark.  Backbends are opening and exposing, showing that a person is confortable with vulnerability.  Forward bends are protecting and inward moving.

Of course there are many people who are capable of both.  They are able to be very social and contemplative at the right times.  This person can do backbends and foreward bends equally well.  It is often true, as well, that someone will 'specialize', they can lean back untill they can see the wall behind them, but they have a hard time leaning forward and touching their toes.  It is safe to say that they can also carry on long conversations but have a hard time with meditation.

I encourage you explore what physical talents you may have and see the mental implications of them.  Be careful though.  Reading too much into things can be a danger.  Parrallels can be drawn when the relationships are consistant.

Spinal Alignment

I cannot overemphasize the importance of a healthy spine. I spend a minimum of a half hour a day sitting still and working on subtle spinal alignment. This has proven to give me an extraordinarily strong spine and no back pain whatsoever. It has also provided me with an increase in circulation and overall sensory enhancement. when I align my my spine my sight, hearing, and smelling all grow exponentially. Remembering polarity, as in opposites, we know that plus and minus are both important. This, of course, is slightly metaphorical. Equal benefits to the spine are aquired on the inhale and the exhale. I encourage you to increase the amount of time you can do both. The inhale serves to lengthen the spine and the exhale serves to compress the spine. Again both are important. Big and small are equals in my book. Each serves their own purpose. So it is good to compress as well extend. Feel your spine lengthen when you breath in, and feel it compress as you breath out. It is very simple. The only difficulty is in actually doing it. It may seem so simple that one shouldn't bother. In our complex world why would something so simple be important? It goes back to polarity. Simple and complex are both useful in a well rounded reality. So try it. Spend time every day to breath deeper than ever before. Both lengthen and compress your spine and enjoy the wonderous benefits. You'll be surprised at how good it makes you feel.

First Entry!

Welcome to my new blog! It is a great joy to begin sharing on the internet!
A breif discussion of my history with yoga:
I practiced yoga thousands of years ago in my previous incarnation
I practiced advanced spirituality in my incarnations before that
I practice advanced yoga currently in this here modern age.
Although I studied many forms of yoga, and beleive it is good to take classes I feel it is most important to have a personal practice. Along these lines one should spend time alone working on postures and discovering their own personal being, how they relate to the Universe, and all mental, physical, and spiritual connections in their world.
I studied Bakti yoga with Ananda Marga and of course a wide variety of Hatha yoga, given that there are so many available in the present age, espescially in America. Countless hours have been spent alone in my 'cave' developing my own yoga and meditation.
In lieu of getting with the modern times I have decided to incorporate the web. This helps serve one of the eight limbs of yoga that being knowledge. Unity through knowledge. What better than the information superhighway to share and grow the mind in specific.
I look forward to sharing with all the things i have learned and of course all the joys and struggles I go through on my journey. I love you all.

!Namaste!
